The FKCC Swim Around Key West began in 1977 as one woman's test of her ability to swim around the island of Key West. Now, it's an annual event with people coming from all over the world to participate. The event is put on by Florida Keys Community College, with the benefits going towards the local pool and equipment, and also providing scholarships and swim lessons for locals.
This is a unique race because it is one of the few races in the world where the participants can swim entirely around an island city. It is also a special swim because the swimmers enjoy the clean, warm water and then emerge to celebrate their accomplishments in the legendary nightlife and fun in Key West bars and restaurants on Duval Street.
It is also a very inclusive race. If you are up for a 12.5 mile/20 km swim, that’s great! However, if a marathon swim like that might be a bit too much right now, there are also several relay categories. This flexibility makes it so everyone can join in the fun!
During the race Lifeguards are stationed throughout the course, as are safety boats every mile to ensure swimmer safety. Each swimmer has their own support craft, most relay swims use a small craft boat and most solo swims have their own personal kayak escort. The kayakers are supplied or you can even have a spouse or friend paddle for you to enjoy the adventure too, albeit, a little less strenuously.
This is special swim, a real challenge… and a whole lot of fun for everyone!
Participants can enter in the following race categories:
- Solo swimmers
- Two-person relay
- Three-person relay
Start/Finish: West end of Smathers Beach (Atlantic side)
There is plenty of free parking along Smather’s and Higgs Beach. The easiest way to get there is however by bike or scooter. This is still the most popular way to get around the island.
