In addition to the many celebrations and festivals that take place on our island, Key West is loaded with great attractions, restaurants, and things to do that are here all year round! With so many to choose from, we’ve put together a few of our incredible island favorites perfect for this time of year. We hope you get a chance to see them all!
Key West’s famous motto “One Human Family” is something our island takes great pride in supporting, advertising, & living. Started by a local artist with an idea and 2000 stickers, it has become an international grassroots movement to unite all people and guarantee everyone equal rights, dignity, & respect. The stickers (which are FREE by the way…hint, hint) quickly went viral as a worldwide meme spread by the millions of tourists passing through Key West each year. The campaign now reaches even the most remote areas such as the pacific island of Pago Pago and the Buddhist theocracy of Tibet! It is marked in many places around Key West, but one of the most popular is the colorful sidewalk tile display located at the White Street Pier. It’s FREE – stop by, snap a photo, & help spread the message!
Soak up some big screen fun at Tropic Cinema, a fabulously unique movie theater dripping with Key West style. Rated “Best Cinema in Florida”, this classic downtown picture house shows more artsy & classic films, refreshingly different from the traditional fast-track movie hotspots. While historic in nature, you can still view movie listings, watch trailers, & see show times online with the option to purchase tickets in advance and skip the wait! Get a glimpse of some fabulous timeless pictures, or those not generally shown on the big screen – at least not recently. Whether you have action junkies, horror lovers, romantics, or old souls in your group, you’re sure to find something for everyone. So load up the gang, pick a movie or 2, and settle in with some popcorn!
You simply can NOT visit Key West without adding a stop at Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe! This decadent little delight is packed with every key lime treat you can think of from cookies & pastries to grilling sauces & seasonings to the famous chocolate covered Key Lime Pie on a stick (OMG). You can even find apparel, bath & body products, and snacks for Fido! Choose from 2 great locations: the new Duval Street store which boasts a large, shaded front porch perfect for people watching (an ever-entertaining pastime in Key West) or the original Elizabeth Street location which serves breakfast, lunch, and light fare daily in the tranquil beauty of a koi pond. We recommend trying them both — it’s THAT good! (PS…Kermit often hands out Free Samples at either store front!)
Higgs Beach & Beach Park is a fabulous little piece of island paradise that boasts a diverse array of activities & offerings. Attractions include a Civil War Era Fort (listed on the National Register of Historic Places); “Salute! On the Beach” – a lovely beach side cafe featuring a lighter, Caribbean-influenced cuisine; the largest African Refugee Burial Ground in this hemisphere; & the only shore-accessible underwater marine park in the United States. Activities include swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, beach volleyball, tennis, pickleball & a Children’s Playground. Tropical Water Sports offers a broad array of beach accessories for rent including beach chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, & paddle-boards, and for animal lovers the Park hosts a large and actively utilized dog park with separate runs for small and large dogs!
Deemed “Key West’s Best Happy Hour!” joint, Conch Republic Seafood Company serves up some of the best grub in town in a spacious, open-air, waterfront setting and pairs it with incredible 2-for-1 happy hour drinks from 4-7pm daily. Choose from bottle & draft beer, wines, & premium well drinks galore all with an amazing front row seat on the harbor – HEAVEN! Food favorites include a huge raw bar selection, fresh local catches delivered daily to their dock, and amazing secret recipes that make common dishes outstanding (ie, the calamari dipping sauce!) And if all that isn’t enough, cop a squat at their 80-ft conch bar with over 80 brands of Rum to sample…sure to keep you busy for awhile.
(ps…try the calamari!!!!)
