Key West is bursting with exciting, eclectic, fun-filled things to do! Whatever you’re looking for in a vacation – action, relaxation, entertainment, enlightenment, fine dining, nature, or nightlife – you’re sure to find it here. With so many to choose from, we’ve put together a few of our sultry summer favorites perfect for this time of year. We hope you get a chance to see them all!
Sunset in Key West is a time honored happening when hundreds of people, both local and visitors, gather on the docks of historic Mallory Square. That’s where you’ll see flame tossing jugglers, a Key West sword swallower, tightrope walkers, all the while being serenaded by assorted minstrels and the “Southernmost Bagpiper”. In addition to the slew of buskers and street performers there are a wide variety of artists who exhibit their art on Mallory Dock. If you’re hungry, food vendors set up booths offering conch fritters, key limeade and other libations. There is no admission charge to the nightly celebration, but try to arrive thirty minutes prior to sunset to appreciate the full experience. And maybe you will see the famous Green Flash…
The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a unique experience and one that many visitors return to year after year. In the Conservatory there are 100’s of butterflies of many types, an assortment of exotic, beautiful birds, and an array of colorful, lush native plants. It is a lovely landscaped environment where the visitor walks a path among nature with butterflies flitting and flashing around you. Stop and snap pictures, take in the sounds, and enjoy the quiet, serene surroundings of nature at its best. The gift shop sells a variety of butterfly inspired art, gifts and mementos. Butterflies are also raised there and the visitor can see the process of the butterfly from cocoon to winged beauty.
The Eco-Discovery Center features more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, which interpret the resources and management efforts of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, two national parks, and four national wildlife refuges. Check out the exhibit on Aquarius, the world’s only underwater ocean laboratory, the Living Reef exhibit, which includes a 2,500-gallon reef tank with living corals and tropical fish, the live Reef Cam, and other displays that highlight the coral reef environment. The Center is located in NOAA’s Dr. Nancy Foster Florida Keys Environmental Complex on the Truman Annex waterfront in Key West. Admission is always free (and so is parking), so be sure to stop by for a visit!
