Whether composing novels in his Whitehead Street writing studio or fishing for big game in local waters, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway left a powerful legacy in Key West. And how do Key Westers pay homage to those they love? – With a party of course!
Every year fans gather for a few days in July to commemorate Hemingway’s renowned literary accomplishments, infectious zest for life, and enduring affection for our little island. And true to form they do so with some very fun, intriguing, and colorful festivities. Highlights include museum exhibitions displaying rare Hemingway photographs & memorabilia, a fantastically fun look-alike contest judged by previous years’ contestants, prose & poetry readings, an offbeat running of the bulls, a fabulous street fair on Duval Street, an exciting marlin fishing tournament, and the culmination of a short-story competition directed by Ernest’s granddaughter Lorain Hemingway, herself an author. Many restaurants, bars & shops across town also join in the festivities hosting Hemingway-based contests, games, & activities — so be sure to come out and enjoy the fun — this gala has it ALL!
